OBD-II fault code

P2712: Hydraulic Power Unit Leakage

What it means

The transmission hydraulic power unit (pump + accumulator) has detected a pressure drop that suggests internal leakage. Pressure cannot be held during shifts.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission hydraulic power unit uses a pump and accumulator to build and hold pressure for gear changes. The transmission control module sets P2712 when pressure drops in a way that indicates the unit may be leaking internally and cannot maintain the pressure needed during shifts.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Worn or hardened seals in the valve body
  2. Worn hydraulic pump cannot maintain pressure

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light may be on
  • Delayed, harsh, or slipping shifts
  • Transmission may enter a reduced-function mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related transmission codes, including any pressure readings and the conditions when shifts became delayed or slipped.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle’s specified procedure, and inspect for external leaks that could lower the supply to the pump.
  3. Inspect accessible wiring and connectors for pressure-related sensors or controls for looseness, corrosion, or damage that could distort pressure data.
  4. Review live transmission pressure and shift data against the manufacturer’s specifications to see whether pressure falls during a shift or at idle.
  5. If fluid level and sensor circuits check out, test pump output, accumulator operation, and valve body sealing using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair an external fluid leak and refill with the specified transmission fluid.
  • Repair a damaged pressure sensor circuit or connector if testing identifies an inaccurate reading.
  • Replace worn valve body seals or repair internal leakage confirmed by testing.
  • Repair or replace a worn hydraulic pump if it cannot maintain specified pressure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips if shifts are delayed, harsh, or slipping; continued pressure loss can damage the clutches and leave the transmission unable to engage a gear. If it loses drive or shifts unpredictably, stop safely and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
