OBD-II fault code

P25E9: Supercharger Disconnect Clutch Stuck Open

What it means

The supercharger disconnect clutch is detected as stuck open, so it may fail to engage when commanded. Reduced supercharger output or engine performance may result.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

A supercharger disconnect clutch couples the engine drive to the supercharger when boost is needed. The control module checks whether the clutch engages when commanded; this code indicates it detects the clutch remaining open, which can leave the supercharger unable to provide its expected output.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open electromagnetic clutch coil
  2. Worn friction surfaces leave the air gap too large to attract
  3. Corroded armature plate stuck open

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and scan-tool commands to confirm the conditions when engagement was requested and whether the clutch feedback showed it remained open.
  2. With the engine off, inspect the clutch connector, wiring, and accessible armature area for corrosion, damage, or obstruction.
  3. Check the clutch coil circuit for continuity and shorts, following the manufacturer's procedure, because an open coil cannot create the magnetic force to engage.
  4. Measure clutch air gap and inspect the friction surfaces for wear or corrosion against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring, coil, and air gap are sound, test the control driver and clutch engagement under the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded clutch connector terminals or repair damaged wiring.
  • Replace an open supercharger clutch coil.
  • Correct excessive clutch air gap or replace worn friction components as specified.
  • Free or replace a corroded armature plate that cannot move into engagement.

Can I keep driving?

The code alone does not establish a transmission fault; avoid demanding acceleration because boost may be reduced. If the vehicle also shifts harshly, enters limp mode, or loses power enough to make traffic unsafe, stop driving and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
