What it means
The PTO sense circuit signal is intermittent or erratic. The code does not identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The PTO sense circuit carries a status signal that the control module monitors while determining whether the power take-off is active. P253E sets when that signal changes erratically or intermittently, rather than staying stable enough to interpret; the code does not identify the faulty connection or device.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose connector
- Chattering limit switch
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check-engine warning light
- PTO engagement indication may flicker or change unexpectedly
- PTO operation may be intermittent
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and scan-tool PTO status for changes around the time the fault occurred.
- Inspect the PTO sense connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or strain that could interrupt contact.
- Check the PTO limit switch or other sensing device for loose mounting or chatter as it changes state.
- With live data displayed, gently move the harness and connector to see whether the status flickers; keep clear of moving PTO equipment.
- Test circuit continuity and the switch or sensor through its operating range against the manufacturer's specification, then check the module input if those tests pass.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose PTO sense connector.
- Clean or repair corroded terminals and damaged wiring.
- Adjust or replace a chattering limit switch if testing confirms it is unstable.
- Replace a sensor that produces an intermittent signal despite sound wiring and connections.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid operating equipment that depends on the PTO until its status and operation are consistent. Intermittent indication can make PTO availability unpredictable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
