OBD-II fault code

P253B: PTO Sense Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The PTO sense signal is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected. The code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The PTO sense circuit reports PTO engagement or position to the control module. P253B sets when that signal is outside its expected range or does not change as expected, which can reflect a sticky PTO clutch, misadjusted switch, or sensor drift rather than a simple open circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sticky or worn PTO clutch
  2. Mis-adjusted limit switch
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine warning light
  • PTO engagement indication may be inaccurate
  • PTO operation may be inconsistent or unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and note whether the PTO was commanded on or off when the range/performance fault set.
  2. Compare scan-tool PTO command and sense data through the permitted engagement states, checking whether the signal changes consistently.
  3. Inspect the PTO sense sensor or limit switch mounting and linkage for misalignment, wear, looseness, or obstruction.
  4. Check the sense circuit wiring and connector for damage or poor contact, then test the signal against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the electrical circuit passes, inspect PTO clutch movement for sticking and verify switch adjustment or sensor calibration using vehicle-specific information.

Common fixes

  • Adjust a misaligned PTO limit switch to the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair a loose or damaged connector or sense-circuit wire.
  • Service a sticking PTO clutch or linkage so the sensed state follows commanded engagement.
  • Replace an aged or out-of-range PTO sensor after confirming the circuit and adjustment are correct.

Can I keep driving?

PTO indication may be inaccurate and engagement can be inconsistent or unavailable. Avoid using PTO-driven equipment until engagement and disengagement are reliably confirmed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
