What it means
The PTO sense circuit signal is below the expected limit. The code does not establish PTO engagement state or identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The PTO sense circuit tells the control module whether PTO engagement is present. P253C sets when the monitored sense signal is below its expected limit, which may be caused by a wire shorted to ground or a resistive connection; it does not establish whether the PTO is actually engaged.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine warning light
- PTO engagement indication may be absent or incorrect
- PTO operation may be unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and note whether the PTO was commanded on or off when the low signal occurred.
- Compare scan-tool PTO sense status with the actual PTO state, if the data is available.
- Inspect the sense wire and connectors for chafing to ground, corrosion, loose pins, or damage near the PTO assembly.
- Test the sense circuit for a short to ground and excessive resistance, following the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring checks out, test the PTO sensor or switch output and verify the module-side input.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose PTO sense connector pins.
- Repair chafed wiring or a sense wire shorted to ground.
- Repair an open or high-resistance connection in the PTO sense circuit.
- Replace a faulty PTO sensor or switch, or repair the module input, only after circuit testing identifies the source.
Can I keep driving?
The PTO engagement indication may be absent or incorrect, and PTO operation may be unavailable. Do not use PTO-driven equipment unless you can confirm that it engages and disengages safely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
