OBD-II fault code

P253D: PTO Sense Circuit High

What it means

The PTO sense circuit signal is above the expected limit. The code does not establish PTO engagement state or identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The power take-off (PTO) sense circuit reports a signal the control module uses to determine PTO status. P253D sets when that signal rises above the expected limit; it does not prove the PTO is engaged or show why the signal is high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense wire shorted to battery voltage
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check-engine warning light
  • PTO engagement indication may be incorrect
  • PTO operation may be inconsistent or unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and PTO status on a scan tool to see when the high signal was recorded and whether the displayed status matches reality.
  2. Inspect the PTO sense connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, or a sense wire touching a battery-positive supply.
  3. With the wiring diagram, check the sense circuit for an unintended connection to battery voltage and inspect the supply wire where it passes near the sense wire.
  4. Measure the sense signal and its power and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification with the PTO in the relevant states.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the PTO switch or sensing device and then the module input using the vehicle's service procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a sense wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector terminals and restore a sound connection.
  • Repair a pinched supply wire that is contacting the sense circuit.
  • Replace a failed PTO sensing device or switch if testing confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

If PTO indication or operation is unreliable, avoid relying on the PTO until the circuit is repaired, especially when it operates equipment. The warning light may be the only engine symptom, but incorrect status can disrupt PTO use.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
