What it means
The PTO engine-shutdown circuit signal is above the expected limit. The code does not establish how the shutdown circuit is designed or whether it is disabled.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The PTO engine-shutdown circuit carries a signal used in the power take-off shutdown function. The control module monitors that circuit and sets P251F when its signal is higher than the expected limit; the code alone does not show whether shutdown is enabled or how the circuit is configured.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shutdown wire shorted to battery voltage
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- PTO engine-shutdown behavior may be affected
- PTO operation may be unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related PTO or power-supply codes to see when the shutdown-circuit fault was detected.
- Inspect the PTO engine-shutdown wire and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with a battery-voltage source.
- With the wiring diagram, check whether the shutdown-circuit signal remains high under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.
- With power off and the circuit isolated as directed by the manufacturer, test the shutdown wire for a short to battery-voltage wiring.
- If the wiring and connections pass, check the module inputs and PTO shutdown controls using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair insulation where the shutdown wire is touching a battery-voltage source.
- Clean or repair corroded or loose connector terminals.
- Repair or replace damaged shutdown-circuit wiring.
- Repair a faulty PTO shutdown control or module only after circuit tests identify it.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle drives normally, ordinary driving may be possible, but PTO shutdown behavior or PTO availability may be affected. Avoid relying on the PTO shutdown function until it is checked, especially where unexpected engine operation could create a hazard.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
