OBD-II fault code

P251D: PTO Engine Shutdown Circuit/Open

What it means

The PTO engine-shutdown circuit is open or has a detected open-circuit fault. The code does not establish the circuit's equipment or safety function on a particular vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The PTO engine-shutdown circuit carries a shutdown signal associated with PTO operation to the control module. P251D sets when that circuit is detected as open, so the shutdown control may not reach the module and PTO operation may be unavailable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Broken shutdown wire or unplugged work attachment
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine may not shut down through the PTO shutdown control
  • PTO operation may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live PTO shutdown status while using the shutdown control, if the scan tool provides it.
  2. Inspect the shutdown control, work-attachment connector, and harness for an unplugged connection or broken wire.
  3. Check connector terminals for a pushed-back pin, corrosion, or poor seating.
  4. Test the shutdown circuit for continuity and inspect any module or sensor connections using the wiring diagram.
  5. If the external circuit passes, test the shutdown control and relevant module input according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the unplugged work attachment or shutdown connector.
  • Reseat a pushed-back pin and repair loose or corroded terminals.
  • Repair a broken or open shutdown wire.
  • Repair the control or module connection if testing confirms an internal open.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the PTO shutdown control to stop the engine until it has been confirmed to work; use the vehicle's normal shutdown method. PTO operation may be unavailable, so avoid using affected equipment.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
