OBD-II fault code

P251E: PTO Engine Shutdown Circuit Low

What it means

The PTO engine-shutdown circuit signal is below the expected limit. The code does not establish that a shutdown is being requested or how the engine will respond.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The PTO engine-shutdown circuit carries a shutdown-related signal to the control module. P251E sets when that circuit signal is below its expected limit, which may be caused by a short to ground, high resistance at a connector, or chafed wiring.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shutdown wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • PTO engine-shutdown behavior may be affected
  • PTO operation may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live PTO shutdown status while operating the control, if available.
  2. Inspect the shutdown harness for chafing, damaged insulation, or contact with ground, especially near attachment connectors.
  3. Check connector terminals for corrosion, looseness, or high resistance.
  4. Test the shutdown signal circuit for a short to ground and verify its signal behavior using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the harness and connectors pass, test the shutdown control and module input against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed wiring or a shutdown signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded or high-resistance connector terminals.
  • Repair a damaged shutdown control or its wiring if it fails the specified test.
  • Repair the module connection if testing confirms the fault lies at its input.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the PTO shutdown control to stop the engine until its operation is verified; use the normal engine shutdown method. Avoid using PTO equipment if its shutdown behavior is uncertain.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
