OBD-II fault code

P2521: A/C Request A Circuit High

What it means

The A/C request A circuit signal is above the expected limit. The code does not establish whether the compressor will be disabled.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The A/C request A circuit carries a request signal associated with air-conditioning operation. The control module monitors this circuit and sets P2521 when its signal rises above the expected limit; the code does not determine whether the compressor will be disabled.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Request wire shorted to battery voltage
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • A/C operation may be unavailable or inconsistent
  • A/C request may not be recognized

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related HVAC or module codes to identify when the A/C request A fault appeared.
  2. Compare the scan-tool A/C request A status with the control setting while switching A/C on and off.
  3. Inspect the request A wire and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with a battery-voltage source.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, check the request A circuit for a short to battery voltage and test continuity with the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer.
  5. If the wiring passes, check the HVAC request output and receiving-module input using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair request A wiring pinched against a battery-voltage source.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose request A connector terminals.
  • Repair or replace damaged request A circuit wiring.
  • Repair a faulty HVAC control or module only after circuit tests identify it.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive if the vehicle otherwise operates normally, but A/C may be unavailable or inconsistent. Watch for abnormal engine behavior when A/C is selected, since the code alone does not establish how the request circuit is being interpreted.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
