OBD-II fault code

P251B: PTO Enable Switch Circuit Low

What it means

The PTO enable switch circuit signal is below the expected limit. The code does not establish that PTO is enabled or identify the circuit fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The PTO enable switch circuit reports the enable-switch state to the control module. P251B sets when the circuit signal is below its expected limit, which may result from a short to ground, a switch stuck closed, or resistance at the connector.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch wire shorted to ground
  2. Switch stuck closed
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • PTO may not engage or may be inhibited
  • PTO enable status may be incorrect

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live PTO enable status while moving the switch between positions.
  2. Inspect the PTO enable switch and harness for chafing, a wire contacting ground, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  3. Check the switch circuit signal and connector condition against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Test whether the switch remains closed when it should change state, and check for a short to ground in the harness.
  5. If the switch and wiring pass, verify the signal at the control module connector.

Common fixes

  • Repair a switch wire shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
  • Replace a PTO enable switch that is stuck closed or fails its specified state test.
  • Clean or repair corroded or high-resistance connector terminals.
  • Repair an open or poor connection found between the switch and module.

Can I keep driving?

Road driving is generally unaffected, but the PTO may be inhibited or its enable status may be wrong. Keep PTO equipment disengaged until the switch state is reliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
