OBD-II fault code

P258E: PTO Enable Switch Performance

What it means

The PTO enable switch is electrically intact but its state does not match operating conditions — for example asserted while the vehicle is rolling above the PTO speed limit, or asserted/de-asserted in fast succession. The ECM rejects the request to avoid unsafe PTO engagement.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The power take-off (PTO) enable switch tells the engine control module that PTO operation is requested. The module checks whether the switch state is plausible for vehicle conditions and detects an inconsistent request, such as a request while moving too fast for engagement or rapid switching that may indicate contact bounce.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch contact bounce
  2. Switch operated while vehicle is moving

Symptoms

  • PTO warning light may come on
  • PTO may fail to engage or may be disabled
  • PTO indicator may behave inconsistently

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and related PTO codes to check vehicle speed and PTO-enable state when the fault set.
  2. With the vehicle stationary and secured, operate the PTO enable switch once and watch its state on a scan tool for a clean, stable change.
  3. Inspect the switch and connector for looseness, contamination, or damage that could make the contact bounce.
  4. Check the enable-switch wiring for intermittent opens or shorts while gently moving the harness, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If switch input and wiring are stable, verify that the ECM is receiving the correct vehicle-speed and PTO interlock information.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the PTO enable switch connector.
  • Repair damaged or loose switch wiring.
  • Replace a switch that produces a bouncing or unstable state.
  • Correct a faulty speed or interlock input if it is causing the ECM to reject a stationary PTO request.

Can I keep driving?

Normal driving is generally possible, but the PTO may remain disabled or fail to engage. Do not try to engage it while moving; secure the vehicle and follow its PTO operating instructions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
