What it means
The ECU detects an out-of-range charging system voltage without specifying high or low. Indicates a generic charging fault that requires further sub-code investigation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The charging system includes the alternator, regulator, battery, and the wiring that connects them. P2502 indicates that system voltage is outside the expected range, but does not say whether it is too high or too low, so scan data and electrical checks are needed to narrow down the fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Alternator output fault
- Voltage regulator fault
Symptoms
- Charging-system warning light
- Battery may lose charge
- Dim or flickering lights
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live system voltage and related charging codes to determine whether the fault occurred during a high or low voltage condition.
- Inspect the battery terminals, alternator connections, drive belt, and visible charging-system wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or slipping.
- Check battery condition and measure charging voltage under the conditions identified in the freeze-frame, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
- Check alternator output and regulator operation under electrical load to identify an output fault.
- If output is abnormal, check charging-system grounds and wiring voltage drops before replacing components.
Common fixes
- Clean and tighten corroded or loose battery and alternator connections.
- Repair damaged charging-system wiring or grounds.
- Replace a worn or slipping drive belt if it is preventing proper alternator output.
- Repair or replace the alternator or regulator if testing confirms the fault.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible briefly, but a charging fault can leave you stranded or cause electrical systems to behave unpredictably. Avoid long trips and switch off nonessential electrical loads until the system is checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
