What it means
The L-terminal feedback line from the alternator (charging warning lamp circuit) reads below the lower limit. The lamp may stay on, and battery voltage may drift if regulation feedback is also affected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The alternator’s L terminal provides feedback used by the charging warning-lamp circuit and, on some systems, alternator regulation. P2500 means this feedback line is below its expected electrical range, which can keep the charging light on and may affect charging if the regulator depends on that signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- L-terminal shorted to ground
- Alternator regulator failed
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Charging-system warning light
- Battery may lose charge
- Dim or flickering lights
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check battery and charging-system warnings, including whether the battery voltage is declining while the engine runs.
- Inspect the alternator L-terminal connector and harness for corrosion, a loose fit, damaged insulation, or a wire shorted to ground.
- Check battery condition and charging output using the manufacturer's procedure to determine whether the fault is limited to the lamp feedback circuit.
- With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test L-terminal wire continuity and shorts to ground against the wiring diagram.
- If the wiring and connector pass, test the alternator regulator and L-terminal response to determine whether the alternator assembly has failed.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose L-terminal connections.
- Repair the L-terminal wire if it is shorted to ground or damaged.
- Replace the alternator if its regulator fails the manufacturer's test.
- Charge or replace a weak battery if separate battery testing shows it is no longer serviceable.
Can I keep driving?
Check that the charging light is not staying on and avoid unnecessary electrical loads if lights dim or the battery warning appears. If charging is failing, the engine may stall or fail to restart once the battery is depleted.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
