OBD-II fault code

P2504: Charging System Voltage High

What it means

The ECU detects a battery voltage above the regulated upper limit. The voltage regulator is not limiting alternator output, risking damage to electronic modules and battery overcharge.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The alternator regulator controls how much voltage the alternator supplies to the battery and vehicle electronics. P2504 sets when charging voltage rises above the expected upper range, which can overcharge the battery and expose electrical components to excessive voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty voltage regulator
  2. Poor alternator ground

Symptoms

  • Charging-system warning light
  • Unusually bright or flickering lights
  • Electrical accessories may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live charging voltage and other charging-system codes to confirm when the high-voltage condition occurs.
  2. Inspect alternator and battery connections, especially the alternator ground and engine-to-body grounds, for looseness or corrosion.
  3. Measure charging voltage at the battery under the conditions shown in the freeze-frame and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Check voltage drop across alternator grounds and charging cables while the system is operating.
  5. If grounds and wiring are sound, test the alternator regulator and alternator output for overcharging.

Common fixes

  • Clean and tighten the alternator and battery ground connections.
  • Repair damaged or high-resistance charging cables and grounds.
  • Repair or replace the alternator regulator if testing confirms it is not controlling output.
  • Replace the alternator if its regulator or internal components cannot be serviced separately.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if lights are unusually bright or electrical accessories are behaving erratically; excessive charging voltage can damage the battery and vehicle electronics. Arrange prompt checks and stop if electrical symptoms worsen.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
