What it means
The ECU detects that battery voltage during operation stays below the regulated target. The alternator output is insufficient to maintain charge under load, eventually leading to battery depletion.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The alternator supplies electrical power while the engine runs and replenishes the battery. P2503 sets when the control module detects charging voltage below the expected level, meaning the battery may be supporting the vehicle's electrical loads instead of receiving enough charge.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Weak alternator output
- Faulty voltage regulator
- Slipping drive belt
Symptoms
- Charging-system warning light
- Battery may lose charge
- Slow cranking or difficulty starting
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live charging voltage and system load to see when voltage falls below the expected range.
- Inspect the drive belt for looseness, wear, or slipping, then check battery terminals and alternator connections for corrosion or looseness.
- Check battery condition and charging voltage at idle and under electrical load, comparing readings with the manufacturer's specification.
- Test alternator output and regulator operation under load to determine whether the alternator can maintain charging voltage.
- If alternator output is adequate at its terminals, check positive-cable and ground voltage drops between the alternator and battery.
Common fixes
- Clean and tighten the battery terminals and alternator connections.
- Adjust or replace a worn or slipping drive belt as appropriate for the vehicle.
- Repair excessive resistance in charging cables or grounds.
- Repair or replace the alternator or regulator if output testing confirms a fault.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving because the battery can lose charge and the engine may eventually stall or fail to restart. Avoid unnecessary electrical loads, and stop somewhere safe if the charging warning appears with dimming lights or worsening starting.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
