OBD-II fault code

P2464: Diesel Particulate Filter Differential Pressure Too Low Bank 2

What it means

The module detects differential pressure across the particulate filter below the calibrated threshold for bank 2. The reading can be caused by a pressure sensor or sensing-line fault; it does not by itself confirm a blocked filter.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The module compares pressure before and after the DPF on bank 2 to judge exhaust restriction. P2464 sets when the reported differential pressure is below the calibrated threshold; the reading can reflect a sensor or sensing-line fault and does not by itself prove the filter is blocked.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. DPF heavily clogged
  2. Blocked pressure sensing line

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or DPF warning light on
  • Power loss / limp mode
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Failed forced regeneration attempts

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare bank 2 differential pressure with engine speed and load to see when the reading falls below the expected range.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 pressure sensor connectors and wiring for loose connections, corrosion, or damage that could corrupt the reading.
  3. Check both bank 2 pressure sensing lines for blockage, kinks, leaks, cracks, or incorrect routing.
  4. Compare live bank 2 pressure data at idle and with engine speed increased, looking for a plausible response rather than assuming the DPF is clogged.
  5. Test the bank 2 sensor signal, supply, and ground circuits and verify sensor operation against the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If sensor and lines check out, assess bank 2 DPF condition and regeneration status using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clear a blockage or repair a leak in the bank 2 pressure sensing lines.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connections at the bank 2 pressure sensor.
  • Replace the bank 2 differential pressure sensor if its output fails the manufacturer's specification.
  • Service the bank 2 DPF only after confirming actual restriction with the manufacturer's procedure.

Can I keep driving?

With the DPF warning, power loss, or limp mode, avoid heavy loads and arrange prompt diagnosis; a low pressure reading alone does not establish that the filter is blocked. Continued operation with a real DPF or sensing fault can impair regeneration and emissions control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
