What it means
A general circuit fault is detected on the EGT sensor at bank 2 sensor 3 (typically just downstream of the turbo or before the catalyst). The ECU loses thermal protection feedback for the catalyst and DPF.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 2 sensor 3 exhaust gas temperature sensor reports exhaust heat to the control module, which uses the reading to protect emissions equipment such as the catalyst and DPF. P2466 sets when the module detects an open or general electrical fault in this sensor's circuit and loses reliable temperature feedback.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or damaged wiring to the sensor
- Loose or corroded connector
- Faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor
- Blown fuse or power/ground circuit fault
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related exhaust temperature or emissions codes to see when the bank 2 sensor 3 fault was detected.
- Locate bank 2 sensor 3 using the vehicle's service information and inspect its connector and nearby wiring for heat damage, corrosion, looseness, or an open wire.
- Check the sensor and harness routing for rubbing, melting, or damage near the exhaust.
- Use live data to compare bank 2 sensor 3 temperature with other exhaust temperature readings from a cold start through warm-up for a missing or implausible signal.
- Test the sensor circuit for continuity and check its supply and ground, where applicable, against the manufacturer's wiring information.
- If the wiring and circuit are intact, test bank 2 sensor 3 against the manufacturer's specification and replace it if faulty.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the bank 2 sensor 3 connector and clean or repair poor terminal contact.
- Repair an open or heat-damaged section of sensor wiring and secure it away from the exhaust.
- Repair a failed fuse or power or ground fault if circuit testing identifies one.
- Replace the bank 2 sensor 3 exhaust gas temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive gently if the vehicle has no warning beyond the engine light and no loss of power, but avoid towing or hard acceleration until the fault is checked. Without bank 2 sensor 3 temperature feedback, DPF or catalyst protection and regeneration may be limited.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
