OBD-II fault code

P2447: Secondary Air Injection System Pump Stuck Off Bank 2

What it means

Bank 2 secondary air pump runs continuously. Either a stuck-on relay or a shorted control output keeps the pump powered when it should be off.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 secondary air injection pump should operate during cold start and stop when the engine control module commands it off. The module monitors the pump control circuit to check that the pump stops at the right time. P2447 indicates the Bank 2 pump continues running after the off command, often because its relay is stuck closed or the control output is shorted on.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Relay stuck closed
  2. Driver stage shorted on
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Air pump continues running after startup
  • Unusual noise from the air pump
  • Battery may discharge if the pump keeps running

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to compare the Bank 2 pump command with whether the pump continues running after the cold-start period.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 pump relay, fuse, wiring, and connector for heat damage, corrosion, loose connections, or a wire shorted to power.
  3. If the pump is running unexpectedly, remove the relay and check whether the pump stops to help identify a stuck relay.
  4. Test the relay and control output circuit for a short or unintended continuity, following the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the electrical controls check out, inspect the pump and air plumbing for sticking, contamination, or damage.

Common fixes

  • Replace a Bank 2 pump relay that stays closed.
  • Repair a control wire shorted to power or a damaged connector.
  • Repair or replace a faulty pump driver circuit if testing identifies it.
  • Replace a sticking or damaged Bank 2 pump or air-system component.

Can I keep driving?

Do not leave the vehicle unattended with the pump running, as it can drain the battery and wear out or overheat the pump. Arrange prompt repair if the pump continues after the engine is off.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
