What it means
Bank 2 secondary air pump does not deliver air when commanded. The catalyst light-off process is delayed and cold-start emissions rise.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The Bank 2 secondary air injection pump supplies air to the exhaust during cold start to help the catalyst warm up. The engine control module checks whether the pump operates and the expected airflow is present when it commands the system on. P2446 indicates the Bank 2 pump is not delivering the expected air, which can happen if it is seized, has an open relay circuit, or the air path is restricted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pump seized from condensate corrosion
- Relay failed open
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough idle or hesitation during cold start
- Failed emissions inspection
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and scan-tool commands to confirm the fault occurs during a cold start when the Bank 2 pump should run.
- Inspect the Bank 2 pump, connector, wiring, fuse, relay, and air hoses for corrosion, damage, loose connections, or water entry.
- Check the Bank 2 pump fuse, relay, power, ground, and control signal while the pump is commanded on, following the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
- If the pump has power and ground but does not run, check for a seized or corroded impeller.
- If the pump runs, inspect the Bank 2 switching valve and air passages for blockage or leaks that could prevent delivery.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or corroded Bank 2 pump wiring or connectors.
- Replace a failed pump relay or blown fuse after checking for the cause.
- Replace a seized or corroded Bank 2 secondary air pump.
- Clear a blocked Bank 2 air passage or repair a leaking hose or faulty valve.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, you may be able to drive to a repair location, but cold-start emissions will rise and the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection. Have it checked promptly if cold-start hesitation or power loss develops.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
