What it means
The secondary-air pump does not run when commanded during cold start. Often a seized pump (after exhaust back-feed corroded the impeller), a blown fuse, or a failed relay.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The secondary air injection pump supplies air to the exhaust during cold start, helping the catalyst reach operating temperature sooner. The engine control module monitors the pump circuit and system response when it commands the pump on. P2444 indicates the Bank 1 pump is not operating as expected when commanded, which can result from a seized pump or loss of electrical power.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pump seized by corrosion
- Pump relay failed
- Pump fuse blown
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough idle or hesitation during cold start
- Failed emissions inspection
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and scan-tool commands to confirm the fault occurs during the cold-start period when the Bank 1 pump should run.
- Inspect the Bank 1 pump, its connector, wiring, fuse, relay, and air hoses for corrosion, damage, or signs of water entry.
- Check the pump fuse and relay and verify that the pump receives power and ground when commanded on, using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
- If power and ground are present, check whether the pump turns and moves air; a seized or corroded impeller can prevent operation.
- If the pump runs but airflow is weak, inspect the Bank 1 plumbing and switching valve for blockage or leakage.
Common fixes
- Replace a blown pump fuse after checking for a short or seized pump that may have caused it to fail.
- Replace a failed pump relay.
- Repair corroded wiring or a damaged pump connector.
- Replace a seized or corroded Bank 1 air pump.
- Repair blocked or leaking air plumbing or a faulty switching valve.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, short trips may be possible, but cold-start emissions will be higher and the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection. Arrange repair soon, especially if the pump or wiring shows signs of overheating.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
