OBD-II fault code

P2445: Secondary Air Injection System Pump Stuck Off Bank 1

What it means

The secondary-air pump continues to run after the cold-start window, when the ECU has commanded it off. Usually a stuck-closed relay welding the pump permanently to battery voltage.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The secondary air injection pump runs during a limited cold-start period, then should switch off. The engine control module monitors the Bank 1 pump and its control circuit to confirm it stops when commanded. P2445 sets when the Bank 1 pump continues running after that command, commonly because the relay remains closed or the control wire is shorted to power.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump relay stuck closed
  2. Drive line shorted to supply
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Air pump continues running after startup
  • Unusual noise from the air pump
  • Battery may discharge if the pump keeps running

How to diagnose it

  1. Check scan-tool data and freeze-frame information to confirm the Bank 1 pump is commanded off while it continues to run.
  2. Inspect the Bank 1 pump, relay, fuse, connector, and wiring for damage, overheating, corrosion, or a wire contacting a power source.
  3. With the pump running unexpectedly, check whether it stops when the relay is removed; this helps distinguish a stuck relay from a control-circuit fault.
  4. Test the relay and Bank 1 pump control wiring for unwanted continuity to power, following the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If electrical control is correct, check the pump and air plumbing for sticking, contamination, or damage.

Common fixes

  • Replace a relay that remains closed after the pump-off command.
  • Repair a Bank 1 pump control wire shorted to power or a damaged connector.
  • Replace a faulty pump control component if circuit tests identify it.
  • Repair or replace a sticking or damaged Bank 1 pump or air-system component.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid leaving the vehicle parked with the pump running, because it can drain the battery and may overheat or wear out the pump. If it continues running after shutdown, address the fault promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
