What it means
Particulate Filter Restriction Soot Accumulation Too High Bank 2: the control module has detected this fault condition.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 2 DPF captures soot and normally clears it during regeneration, while pressure and temperature readings help the control module estimate loading. This code indicates that estimated soot accumulation has exceeded the allowed limit, often after interrupted regenerations or because excess soot or inaccurate sensor readings distorted the estimate.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Excessive soot buildup from repeated interrupted regenerations
- Faulty exhaust temperature or DPF pressure sensor
- Engine or fuel-system fault producing excess soot
- Restricted exhaust or DPF
Symptoms
- Check engine light or DPF warning light on
- Power loss / limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Failed forced regeneration attempts
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data, bank 2 soot estimate, DPF differential pressure, regeneration history, and exhaust temperatures.
- Inspect the bank 2 pressure-sensor hoses for blockage, splitting, heat damage, or loose connections that could falsely indicate high soot loading.
- Check bank 2 exhaust temperature sensor readings and wiring for plausible values, especially during a regeneration attempt.
- Look for engine or fuel-system faults that create excess soot and review whether repeated short trips or interrupted cycles prevented regeneration.
- Compare measured pressure and sensor values with the manufacturer's specification; confirm that the filter is safe for regeneration before attempting one.
Common fixes
- Repair or clear a blocked or damaged bank 2 DPF pressure-sensor hose.
- Repair faulty sensor wiring or replace a bank 2 pressure or temperature sensor confirmed out of specification.
- Correct engine or fuel-system faults that are producing excess soot.
- Carry out an approved regeneration if the filter is within safe limits, or clean or replace the bank 2 DPF if restriction is confirmed.
Can I keep driving?
With a DPF warning or reduced power, avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips until the restriction is assessed. Excess soot can worsen exhaust restriction, and attempting regeneration when loading is too high may damage the filter.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
