OBD-II fault code

P24A4: Particulate Filter Restriction Soot Accumulation Too High Bank 1

What it means

Particulate Filter Restriction Soot Accumulation Too High Bank 1: the control module has detected this fault condition.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 1 DPF traps soot from that exhaust bank, and the controller estimates loading from pressure and other sensor inputs. P24A4 indicates that bank 1 soot accumulation is above the high threshold, often after repeated incomplete regenerations, and the filter may be too loaded for a routine regeneration.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Severe soot accumulation after repeated incomplete regenerations
  2. Frequent short trips or low-speed driving
  3. Faulty differential-pressure or soot-load sensor
  4. Engine fault causing excessive soot production

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or DPF warning light on
  • Power loss / limp mode
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Failed forced regeneration attempts

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live bank 1 soot-load and differential-pressure readings to confirm the high restriction indication.
  2. Inspect bank 1 differential-pressure sensor hoses for blockage, damage, disconnection, or condensate before assuming the DPF itself is restricted.
  3. Check bank 1 exhaust temperature sensors and their wiring for implausible readings or visible damage.
  4. Inspect the bank 1 DPF and exhaust joints for leaks, damage, or signs of severe restriction.
  5. Scan for engine faults that could produce excessive soot and review regeneration history for repeated failures.
  6. Follow the manufacturer's procedure to assess the soot load and DPF condition before any regeneration attempt.

Common fixes

  • Repair or replace a damaged or blocked bank 1 pressure-sensor hose.
  • Repair bank 1 sensor wiring or connectors and replace a sensor only if testing confirms failure.
  • Correct the engine fault causing excessive soot or repeated regeneration failure.
  • Clean or replace the bank 1 DPF if testing confirms severe soot loading and the manufacturer's procedure calls for it.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid further unnecessary driving if power is reduced or the DPF warning is severe; a heavily loaded bank 1 filter can become more restricted and may be damaged by an unsuitable regeneration. Arrange diagnosis promptly and follow any vehicle warning about stopping.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
