What it means
Particulate Filter Regeneration Incomplete Bank 2: the control module has detected this fault condition.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The control module monitors temperature and pressure during regeneration of the bank 2 DPF to confirm that the soot-burning cycle finishes. This code sets when a bank 2 regeneration starts but does not complete, for example because it is interrupted, remains too cool, or sensor or engine faults prevent the cycle.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Regeneration interrupted by short trips or engine shutdown
- Exhaust temperature too low to complete regeneration
- Faulty exhaust temperature or DPF pressure sensor
- Engine or fuel-system fault causing excessive soot
Symptoms
- Check engine light or DPF warning light on
- Power loss / limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Failed forced regeneration attempts
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to review freeze-frame data, bank 2 regeneration status and history, soot estimate, exhaust temperatures, and DPF pressure.
- Check for a pattern of short trips or engine shutdowns during regeneration that could have interrupted the bank 2 cycle.
- Inspect bank 2 exhaust temperature sensors, connectors, and wiring, and check pressure-sensor hoses for leaks, blockage, or heat damage.
- Check for related engine or fuel-system faults that could cause excess soot or prevent the engine from meeting regeneration conditions.
- Compare bank 2 sensor readings and filter pressure with the manufacturer's specification, then determine whether regeneration is safe and appropriate under the vehicle's service procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged bank 2 temperature-sensor wiring or a sensor confirmed faulty.
- Repair leaking or blocked bank 2 DPF pressure-sensor hoses or replace a faulty sensor.
- Fix engine or fuel-system faults that produce excess soot or prevent regeneration.
- Complete a permitted regeneration after correcting the cause, or service the bank 2 DPF if restriction remains.
Can I keep driving?
If the DPF warning persists or the vehicle loses power, avoid towing and hard acceleration and arrange service promptly. Repeated incomplete regeneration can increase soot loading and lead to stronger restriction or limited power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
