OBD-II fault code

P2436: AIR System Air Flow or Pressure Sensor Circuit Range or Performance Bank 2

What it means

Same as P2430 on bank 2 with the signal in plausible range yet not matching the engine model.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 2 SAI air-flow or pressure sensor reports how the secondary air system is performing. P2436 sets when its signal remains electrically plausible but does not match the expected bank 2 response, so the control module cannot verify the system's operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Air-flow or pressure sensor drift or failure
  2. Damaged or high-resistance wiring
  3. Poor sensor connector contact

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Rough cold start
  • Reduced power or increased emissions

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame data and live readings to compare bank 2 SAI pressure or flow before and during a commanded pump operation.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 sensor connector and harness for corrosion, poor terminal contact, damage, or routing issues that could distort the signal.
  3. Check the bank 2 SAI hoses, passages, and check valve for leaks or restriction that could cause an unexpected sensor response.
  4. Test the sensor signal and circuit continuity during a pump command, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the air path and wiring are sound, test the bank 2 sensor for drift or internal failure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a leaking or restricted bank 2 SAI hose or passage.
  • Restore a loose, corroded, or damaged bank 2 sensor connector or wiring.
  • Replace a sticking bank 2 SAI check valve if it prevents expected airflow.
  • Replace the bank 2 air-flow or pressure sensor if its response is out of specification.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, limited driving is generally possible, though cold starts may be rough and emissions may increase. Arrange repair promptly if power drops or running becomes uneven.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
