OBD-II fault code

P2415: O2 Sensor Exhaust Sample Error Bank 2 Sensor 1

What it means

The control module detects an error in the exhaust sample reported by the oxygen sensor on bank 2, sensor 1. This does not by itself prove that the sensor is faulty.

How it works

Bank 2 Sensor 1 is the upstream oxygen sensor on the bank opposite the one containing cylinder 1, before the catalytic converter. The control module evaluates that bank's exhaust sample for mixture control; P2415 sets when the Bank 2 Sensor 1 sample is judged erroneous, without proving the sensor itself has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Exhaust leak near the sensor
  2. Faulty or contaminated oxygen sensor
  3. Wiring or connector fault
  4. Engine air-fuel mixture problem

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible poor fuel economy or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review bank-specific fuel trims and related oxygen-sensor codes to focus checks on bank 2.
  2. Inspect exhaust joints near Bank 2 Sensor 1 for leaks that could affect its sample.
  3. Check the Bank 2 Sensor 1 connector and wiring for heat damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  4. Compare live Bank 2 Sensor 1 response with Bank 1 Sensor 1 and examine fuel trims for a bank-specific mixture problem.
  5. Test the sensor, heater circuit, and possible engine mixture causes according to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak near Bank 2 Sensor 1.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector terminals at Bank 2 Sensor 1.
  • Correct a bank-specific intake or fuel-mixture fault found during diagnosis.
  • Replace a faulty or contaminated Bank 2 Sensor 1 after verifying its circuit and exhaust path.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, a short trip is generally reasonable, but arrange diagnosis because fuel economy and emissions can be affected. Stop driving if it begins to misfire or run severely rough to reduce the risk of catalytic-converter damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
