OBD-II fault code

P23A1: O2 Sensor Exhaust Sample Error Bank 2 Sensor 2

What it means

O2 Sensor Exhaust Sample Error Bank 2 Sensor 2: the control module has detected this fault condition. (Code P23A1)

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 2 sensor 2 samples exhaust downstream of the catalytic converter on the bank opposite the one containing cylinder 1. The control module checks whether that sensor's exhaust sample is plausible; this code sets when the bank 2 sample is judged faulty, which can result from contamination, an exhaust leak, or a sensor signal problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bank 2 sensor 2 oxygen sensor fouled or contaminated
  2. Exhaust leak or unusual exhaust contamination
  3. Sensor wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live bank 2 sensor 2 readings to see when the sample becomes implausible and whether the condition is steady or intermittent.
  2. Inspect the exhaust around bank 2 sensor 2 and the downstream converter for leaks or damage that could alter the sample.
  3. Check the sensor tip and connector for contamination, damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  4. Compare bank 2 sensor 2 readings with the upstream sensor and bank 1 sensor 2, if equipped, to identify a reading that differs unexpectedly.
  5. Test the sensor signal and wiring, then compare sensor response with the manufacturer's specification before deciding whether the sensor itself has failed.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak near bank 2 sensor 2.
  • Correct an identified source of exhaust contamination if possible.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the sensor connector.
  • Replace bank 2 sensor 2 if it remains contaminated or gives an implausible reading after circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

A short drive is generally reasonable if the engine runs normally, but schedule diagnosis because emissions may be affected and an emissions test may fail. Avoid continued driving if rough running or hesitation becomes pronounced.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
