OBD-II fault code

P2414: O2 Sensor Exhaust Sample Error Bank 1 Sensor 1

What it means

The control module detects an error in the exhaust sample reported by the oxygen sensor on bank 1, sensor 1. This does not by itself prove that the sensor is faulty or that the mixture is running lean or rich.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 Sensor 1 is the upstream oxygen sensor on the bank containing cylinder 1, ahead of the catalytic converter. The control module uses its exhaust sample to assess mixture and sensor response; P2414 sets when that reported sample is judged erroneous, which does not by itself prove the sensor is bad or the mixture is lean or rich.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Exhaust leak near the sensor
  2. Faulty or contaminated oxygen sensor
  3. Wiring or connector fault
  4. Engine air-fuel mixture problem

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check fuel-trim, misfire, and related oxygen-sensor codes to understand the operating conditions on bank 1.
  2. Inspect the exhaust around Bank 1 Sensor 1 and upstream joints for leaks that could alter the sample reaching the sensor.
  3. Check the sensor connector and wiring near the hot exhaust for corrosion, damage, or poor connections.
  4. Use live data to compare Bank 1 Sensor 1 response with fuel trims and, where available, the corresponding upstream sensor on the other bank.
  5. Test the sensor response, heater circuit, and engine mixture causes using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure before replacing the sensor.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak near Bank 1 Sensor 1.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a loose, corroded sensor connector.
  • Correct an underlying air-fuel mixture fault identified in fuel-trim or intake checks.
  • Replace contaminated or faulty Bank 1 Sensor 1 after confirming its circuit and exhaust sample path.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain driveable, but poor fuel economy or rough running can worsen and emissions may rise. Avoid extended driving if the engine misfires or runs very roughly, as that can damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
