OBD-II fault code

P2416: O2 Sensor Signals Swapped Bank 1 Sensor 2/Bank 1 Sensor 3

What it means

The control module detects that the signals for oxygen sensors 2 and 3 on bank 1 appear to be reversed. This can occur if their connections are crossed; the code does not identify the repair history.

How it works

Bank 1 Sensor 2 and Bank 1 Sensor 3 are oxygen sensors on the same engine bank, and the control module expects each signal from its assigned exhaust position. P2416 sets when their signal patterns appear reversed, which can happen if their connectors or wiring are crossed; it does not reveal how that happened.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor 2 and 3 connectors crossed
  2. Wiring connected incorrectly
  3. Incorrect sensor installation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for other oxygen-sensor or catalyst codes that could help identify when the bank 1 signals became inconsistent.
  2. Identify the physical locations of Bank 1 Sensor 2 and Sensor 3 from the vehicle information, then inspect both connectors and harness routes.
  3. Check whether the two connectors are crossed or whether either sensor has been installed in the wrong position, especially after exhaust or sensor work.
  4. Compare live data from Bank 1 Sensors 2 and 3 during the applicable operating conditions to see whether their responses match their physical positions.
  5. Trace the wiring to the control module and test signal continuity and connector pin assignment against the wiring diagram.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect Bank 1 Sensor 2 and Sensor 3 to their correctly assigned connectors.
  • Correct wiring or terminal placement that sends either signal to the wrong input.
  • Reinstall sensors in their intended Bank 1 Sensor 2 and Sensor 3 locations.
  • Repair damaged wiring if the signals remain misassigned after connector routing is corrected.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is usually driveable, but incorrect bank 1 oxygen-sensor signals can disrupt emissions monitoring and may affect fuel control. Arrange repair soon, particularly if fuel economy worsens or the engine runs poorly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
