OBD-II fault code

P236A: Cylinder 12 Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent or Erratic

What it means

Cylinder 12 pressure sensor signal jumps or drops out intermittently — connector or wiring issue. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The cylinder 12 pressure sensor provides a changing signal as pressure rises and falls during each combustion cycle. P236A sets when that signal drops out or jumps unpredictably, often because vibration or movement disrupts the sensor connection or harness.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Intermittent rough running or misfire
  • Hesitation
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and note whether the fault occurred during vibration, acceleration, or a particular engine temperature.
  2. Monitor the cylinder 12 pressure signal while the engine runs to look for dropouts that match the reported hesitation or roughness.
  3. Inspect the cylinder 12 connector for loose or corroded terminals, moisture, damaged seals, and pins that move in the housing.
  4. Check the harness for contact with vibrating or moving parts, then gently flex it while watching the live signal for an interruption.
  5. Test the sensor and circuit connections using the manufacturer's procedure, paying attention to faults that appear only with movement or vibration.

Common fixes

  • Secure the cylinder 12 harness so it cannot rub against or vibrate on nearby components.
  • Clean and secure the sensor connector, replacing loose terminals or damaged seals.
  • Repair intermittent wiring damage in the cylinder 12 sensor circuit.
  • Replace the pressure sensor if its output drops out during testing despite sound wiring and connections.

Can I keep driving?

Because the fault can cause intermittent misfiring or hesitation, avoid overtaking, towing, and other situations where sudden power loss would be hazardous. Stop if the engine begins misfiring continuously or loses substantial power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
