OBD-II fault code

P2290: Injector Control Pressure Too Low

What it means

Injector control pressure is below the expected limit. The code does not by itself identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The injector control pressure system supplies pressure required for fuel injection; on engines with a high-pressure oil system, an oil pump helps create that pressure. The control module sets P2290 when injector control pressure falls below its expected limit, which can prevent reliable starting or reduce engine power.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. IPR stuck open
  2. HP oil pump weak

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Hard starting or failure to start
  • Rough running or stalling
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded with measured injector control pressure during cranking and running to confirm when pressure falls below the limit.
  2. Check for related oil-pressure or injector-control codes, then inspect the IPR connector and wiring for damage or poor contact.
  3. Check engine oil level and condition, since the high-pressure oil system depends on an adequate oil supply where fitted.
  4. Use supported scan-tool data or tests to see whether the IPR responds as the module commands pressure to change.
  5. If wiring and sensor data are credible, test the IPR and high-pressure oil pump against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Correct low engine oil level or an oil condition issue where applicable.
  • Repair a loose or damaged IPR connector or wiring.
  • Replace the IPR if it is confirmed stuck open or fails its operation test.
  • Repair or replace a weak high-pressure oil pump if testing confirms inadequate pressure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the engine is hard to start, stalls, or has reduced power; low injector control pressure can cause the engine to stop or fail to start. Do not keep cranking for long periods, and arrange diagnosis before relying on the vehicle.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
