What it means
Turbocharger Boost Control A Slow Response: the control module has detected this fault condition. This affects turbo/supercharger boost-pressure control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Boost control A adjusts turbocharger pressure using an actuator, wastegate, or variable-geometry vanes. The control module sets this code when the boost system responds more slowly than expected to a command, which can delay boost or cause reduced power.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Variable-geometry turbo vanes sticking or moving slowly
- Wastegate or boost-control actuator responding slowly
- Boost-control solenoid or valve restricted
- Vacuum leak or weak vacuum supply, where fitted
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may illuminate
- Reduced engine power or limp mode may occur
- Possible delayed boost response
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame and live data for commanded versus actual boost during acceleration to see when turbo A falls behind its target.
- Inspect the charge-air hoses and connections for leaks or damage that could slow the measured boost response.
- Check the boost-control solenoid or valve and its connectors for restriction, corrosion, loose fit, or damaged wiring.
- Inspect the actuator and wastegate or variable-geometry linkage for sluggish or sticking movement using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Where the system uses vacuum, check the supply hoses and source for leaks or weak vacuum, then compare actuator response with the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a leaking, split, or disconnected vacuum hose where fitted.
- Repair damaged wiring or a poor connector at the boost-control solenoid or actuator.
- Clean or replace a restricted boost-control solenoid or valve.
- Repair a sticking actuator, wastegate, or variable-geometry mechanism after confirming slow movement.
Can I keep driving?
A short, gentle trip may be possible if the engine runs normally, but avoid hard acceleration, towing, and high loads because boost may be delayed and power may drop. Stop if the vehicle enters limp mode or develops smoke or unusual turbo noise.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
