What it means
The DPF substrate on bank 1 has been detected as cracked, melted, or removed. Differential pressure across the filter is too low for the measured exhaust flow — the soot trap no longer works.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The bank 1 diesel particulate filter traps soot in its substrate, and the control module assesses whether exhaust flow creates the expected pressure difference across it. This code sets when bank 1's filter appears to have too little restriction, consistent with a cracked, melted, or missing substrate that can no longer trap soot properly.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Substrate cracked or melted from runaway regen
- Substrate removed by tampering
Symptoms
- Check engine light or DPF warning light on
- Power loss / limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Failed forced regeneration attempts
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and DPF readings for bank 1, including differential pressure and exhaust flow under the recorded conditions.
- Inspect the bank 1 DPF and its connections for external damage, missing sections, tampering, or soot deposits downstream of the filter.
- Check the differential-pressure sensor hoses and wiring for disconnection, blockage, leaks, or damage that could falsely indicate low restriction.
- Compare bank 1 pressure readings at different engine conditions with the manufacturer's specification and check for related temperature or pressure-sensor codes.
- If sensor lines and readings are sound, have the bank 1 filter substrate inspected for cracks, melting, or removal before considering regeneration.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or replace damaged differential-pressure sensor hoses for bank 1.
- Repair wiring or replace a faulty differential-pressure sensor if its readings fail testing.
- Replace the damaged or missing bank 1 DPF substrate or filter assembly.
- Correct the cause of substrate melting, such as a fault that drives excessive exhaust temperature, before fitting a replacement filter.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid continued driving, especially under load, because the bank 1 filter may not be trapping soot and the vehicle may enter limp mode. Do not keep attempting forced regenerations; a damaged or missing substrate will not be restored by regeneration.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
