OBD-II fault code

P226F: Turbocharger Boost Control B Slow Response

What it means

Turbocharger Boost Control B Slow Response: the control module has detected this fault condition. This affects turbo/supercharger boost-pressure control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Turbocharger boost control B uses an actuator, wastegate, or variable-geometry vanes to adjust boost pressure. The control module sets this code when unit B responds more slowly than expected to a boost command, which can delay acceleration or reduce available power.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Variable-geometry turbo vanes sticking or moving slowly
  2. Wastegate or boost-control actuator responding slowly
  3. Boost-control solenoid or valve restricted
  4. Vacuum leak or weak vacuum supply, where fitted

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live data for commanded and actual boost from unit B, focusing on when its response lags.
  2. Inspect turbo B's charge-air hoses and connections for leaks, splits, or loose fittings that may slow pressure build-up.
  3. Inspect the boost-control solenoid or valve and its wiring connectors for restriction, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Check the actuator and wastegate or variable-geometry linkage for binding or slow travel using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If turbo B uses vacuum control, inspect the vacuum supply for leaks or weakness and test actuator response against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a leaking or disconnected vacuum hose where fitted.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector faults at turbo B's control solenoid or actuator.
  • Clean or replace a restricted boost-control valve or solenoid.
  • Repair or replace a sticking actuator, wastegate, or variable-geometry mechanism after confirming the cause.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally, drive gently and avoid towing, steep climbs, or hard acceleration until boost control B is checked. Stop if power drops sharply, limp mode begins, or the engine develops smoke or unusual turbo noise.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
