OBD-II fault code

P226A: Water in Fuel Lamp Control Circuit

What it means

A general electrical fault on the drive line for the dashboard water-in-fuel warning lamp.

How it works

The water-in-fuel lamp control circuit operates the dashboard warning for water detected in the fuel filter. This code indicates an electrical fault in the circuit that drives that lamp, so the warning may not reliably tell you when water is present.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in lamp wiring or connector
  2. Failed water-in-fuel warning lamp
  3. Instrument-cluster or control-module fault

Symptoms

  • Water-in-fuel warning lamp may not illuminate when needed
  • Water-in-fuel warning may be displayed incorrectly
  • Check-engine light may illuminate

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan for related instrument-cluster and water-in-fuel sensor codes, and check whether the warning lamp can be commanded on with the scan tool.
  2. Turn the ignition on and verify whether the water-in-fuel lamp illuminates during its normal bulb check.
  3. Inspect the lamp circuit wiring and connectors between the cluster and the control module for loose pins, corrosion, shorts, or open circuits.
  4. Check the water-in-fuel lamp or cluster indicator using the vehicle's wiring diagram and the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If the wiring and lamp pass, test the instrument-cluster and control-module inputs and outputs to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded lamp-circuit connector.
  • Repair open, shorted, or damaged wiring in the water-in-fuel lamp circuit.
  • Replace a failed water-in-fuel warning lamp or cluster indicator, if separately serviceable.
  • Repair or replace the instrument cluster or control module only after its circuit tests fail.

Can I keep driving?

You may not receive a reliable dashboard warning if water collects in the fuel filter, so arrange a prompt check of the filter and sensor. Avoid relying on the lamp alone until the circuit is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
