What it means
The feedback line that monitors the NOx sensor heater current draw on bank 1 sensor 1 jumps or drops out intermittently — connector or harness issue.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The heater sense circuit on the bank 1 sensor 1 NOx sensor provides feedback about heater operation. P2212 sets when that feedback drops out or fluctuates intermittently, often because vibration or heat disrupts a connector, wire, or sensor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review live heater sense data for bank 1 sensor 1 to see whether dropouts occur during warm-up or under particular operating conditions.
- Inspect the bank 1 sensor 1 connector for loose locking, poor pin fit, corrosion, or heat damage.
- Check the harness routing near the exhaust and vibrating components for rubbing, tension, or damaged insulation.
- With live data monitored, gently move accessible wiring and the connector to see whether the heater sense signal drops out.
- If the harness remains stable, test the sensor heater and sense circuit while cold and warm according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure the connector and repair intermittent terminal contact at bank 1 sensor 1.
- Repair chafed wiring and route it away from heat or vibration.
- Replace damaged connector terminals or restore the connector lock.
- Replace the bank 1 sensor 1 NOx sensor if its heater sense signal drops out with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible if the vehicle behaves normally, but an intermittent heater signal can disrupt NOx readings and emissions control. Limit driving and act promptly if an AdBlue/DEF warning or start countdown appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
