OBD-II fault code

P2209: NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

What it means

The heater feedback (sense) line on the bank 2 NOx sensor reports values outside the expected window — heating is happening but the temperature does not match the model.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The control module monitors heater feedback from the bank 1 sensor 1 NOx sensor to check that heating behaves as expected. P2209 means the feedback response is outside its calibrated range or performance window, even though the circuit may still be functioning.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Heater element ageing, resistance drift
  2. Sensor module failed
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data, warm-up behavior, and related codes to see under what conditions bank 1 sensor 1 heater feedback goes out of range.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 sensor 1 connector, heater sense wiring, and sensor mounting for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or poor contact.
  3. Check the heater fuse, supply, and ground, then compare commanded heater operation with available live feedback on a scan tool.
  4. Test the heater element and sense circuit for abnormal resistance, intermittent connections, or wiring faults using the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit is sound, follow the manufacturer's procedure to determine whether the sensor module or heater feedback has drifted out of range.

Common fixes

  • Secure the sensor mounting and correct a loose connector or terminal.
  • Repair damaged or intermittent bank 1 sensor 1 heater sense wiring.
  • Replace a faulty fuse or restore a weak power or ground connection found in testing.
  • Replace the bank 1 sensor 1 NOx sensor if its heater feedback or element fails specified tests.
  • Replace or repair a control module only if the manufacturer's checks isolate the fault there.

Can I keep driving?

You may be able to drive, but the bank 1 sensor 1 heater may not bring the NOx sensor into its expected operating behavior, affecting emissions control and inspection readiness. Respond promptly to any DEF warning or start countdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
