OBD-II fault code

P21C1: Cold Start Cylinder 12 Injection Timing

What it means

Cylinder 12 cold-start injection timing is outside the calibrated range. The code does not by itself identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

During a cold start, the engine control module uses crankshaft and camshaft timing signals to coordinate fuel delivery to cylinder 12. This code sets when the observed injection timing for cylinder 12 falls outside the calibrated range; it does not identify whether the injector, its circuit, fuel supply, or timing signals caused the deviation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Cylinder 12 injector wear or altered flow
  2. Injector wiring or control fault
  3. Fuel pressure or delivery problem
  4. Crank or cam timing signal issue

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough running or misfire after a cold start
  • Hard starting when the engine is cold
  • Increased exhaust smoke

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and cold-start live data for cylinder 12 timing or contribution, misfire counts, fuel pressure, and crankshaft/camshaft synchronization to see what was abnormal when the code set.
  2. Inspect cylinder 12's injector connector and harness for loose or backed-out pins, corrosion, chafing, or damage that could disrupt injector control.
  3. Check for other cylinder-specific or crankshaft/camshaft timing codes, since shared timing-signal faults can make cylinder 12 injection appear mistimed.
  4. Compare commanded and reported fuel pressure during a cold start with the manufacturer's specification, and investigate a delivery problem if pressure is low or unstable.
  5. Test cylinder 12 injector control wiring and injector operation using the manufacturer's procedure, comparing results with other cylinders where appropriate.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged cylinder 12 injector connector or wiring.
  • Correct a fuel supply or pressure problem identified during testing.
  • Repair a crankshaft or camshaft signal fault if synchronization data or related codes point to one.
  • Replace or service the cylinder 12 injector if testing confirms abnormal flow or operation.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly once warm and the warning is steady, limit driving and avoid heavy loads until diagnosed. Cold-start misfiring or excess smoke can worsen emissions and may damage the exhaust after-treatment system; stop if the misfire is severe or the warning flashes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
