What it means
Cylinder 9 cold-start injection timing is outside the calibrated range. The code does not by itself identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
During cold starting, the engine control module calculates injection timing for cylinder 9 using crankshaft and camshaft position and other engine data. This code sets when cylinder 9's cold-start injection timing falls outside its calibrated range; it does not specify whether injector flow or control, fuel delivery, or timing signals are responsible.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Cylinder 9 injector wear or altered flow
- Injector wiring or control fault
- Fuel pressure or delivery problem
- Crank or cam timing signal issue
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough running or misfire after a cold start
- Hard starting when the engine is cold
- Increased exhaust smoke
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check cylinder 9 cold-start timing and misfire data during a cold start, noting coolant temperature and fuel pressure.
- Inspect the cylinder 9 injector connector and harness for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or poor contact.
- Check for related injector, fuel-pressure, crankshaft, camshaft, and correlation codes that may point to a shared fault.
- Compare cylinder 9 injector correction or balance data with other cylinders under the same cold conditions.
- Test cylinder 9 injector flow and control, then verify crankshaft and camshaft signals and mechanical timing if the fault is still unexplained.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or poorly connected cylinder 9 injector wiring.
- Correct a fuel-pressure or delivery problem confirmed by testing.
- Service or replace the cylinder 9 injector if testing shows abnormal flow or control.
- Repair a crankshaft or camshaft signal fault, or correct mechanical timing if verification shows it is off.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon if the engine runs smoothly when warm, since cold-start misfire and smoke can increase emissions and may worsen. Stop driving if the misfire is severe, the warning flashes, or the engine becomes hard to start.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
