OBD-II fault code

P211D: Throttle Actuator B Control Throttle Body Range/Performance

What it means

The throttle B body itself does not respond as commanded — position feedback is plausible but does not track the setpoint within the calibrated time window.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Throttle actuator B controls a secondary throttle body, and its position feedback tells the module whether it follows commands. P211D sets when throttle B’s feedback appears plausible but the body does not reach the commanded position within the calibrated time, indicating a response or tracking problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Throttle body aged or contaminated
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare throttle B’s commanded position, actual position, and response time in live data.
  2. Inspect throttle B’s plate and bore for contamination or wear that could slow movement, and verify that the sensor and body are mounted securely.
  3. Check throttle B’s connector and wiring for poor contact, corrosion, or damage that could delay or distort position feedback.
  4. Run a scan-tool actuator test, if available, and observe whether throttle B tracks small and larger commands smoothly.
  5. Test throttle B’s position sensor and actuator circuits against the manufacturer’s specification, then inspect the actuator if the body remains slow despite clean movement and sound wiring.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly connected throttle B wiring.
  • Clean or replace a contaminated or worn throttle B body that does not move freely.
  • Secure or replace loose sensor mounting that is disturbing position feedback.
  • Replace the throttle B actuator if it cannot track commands within the required response.
  • Perform the specified relearn after repairs if required.

Can I keep driving?

Throttle B may lag behind commands and cause hesitation or reduced power, though limp mode is not guaranteed. Avoid driving in situations that require quick acceleration, and stop if throttle control becomes erratic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
