OBD-II fault code

P2119: Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range/Performance

What it means

The throttle body does not respond as expected to the commanded position. The code does not by itself identify a closed-position fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The throttle actuator control system moves the throttle plate and compares its position feedback with the commanded position. P2119 sets when the throttle body’s overall movement or response falls outside the calibrated range; the code alone does not mean the plate is stuck at its closed stop.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Throttle bore coked at closed-position stop
  2. Plate or stop misadjusted after service

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual throttle position in live data to see whether the body fails to follow the command.
  2. Inspect the throttle plate and bore for carbon, damage, or binding across its travel, and check the body’s connector and harness for poor contact or damage.
  3. Look for recent service or adjustment that may have disturbed the plate or stop, and verify the assembly and intake connections are installed as specified.
  4. Use a scan-tool actuator test, if available, to observe whether the throttle body responds smoothly throughout its range.
  5. Test the throttle position feedback and actuator circuits against the manufacturer’s specification, then perform any specified relearn after repair.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly connected throttle-body wiring.
  • Clean deposits that restrict throttle-plate movement using the approved method.
  • Correct improper installation or adjustment according to the vehicle maker’s procedure.
  • Replace the throttle body or actuator if it cannot track commanded movement after circuit checks.
  • Perform the required throttle relearn.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may hesitate or have reduced power even if limp mode is not active, so avoid demanding acceleration until the response is predictable. If the engine surges or the throttle behaves erratically, stop driving when safe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
