What it means
The module detects an intermittent or erratic signal from the exhaust aftertreatment fuel pressure sensor circuit. It sets the code when the signal drops out or fluctuates beyond the monitor's limits.
How it works
The exhaust aftertreatment fuel pressure sensor reports pressure in the hydrocarbon-dosing rail used during DPF regeneration. P20E1 means the module sees a signal that drops out or fluctuates beyond its limits, often because of a loose connector, damaged wiring, or an unstable sensor supply or ground.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose or corroded sensor connector
- Damaged or chafed wiring
- Faulty pressure sensor
- Poor sensor power or ground
- Control module fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Hesitation or reduced power
- Hard starting
- Poor fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and graph live pressure-sensor data to identify whether the signal dropout occurs during starting, priming, or regeneration.
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, chafing, or movement near hot or vibrating exhaust components.
- Gently move the harness while watching the live signal to see whether the intermittent fault can be reproduced.
- Check sensor power, ground, and signal continuity while moving the harness, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the wiring remains stable, compare the sensor signal with actual rail pressure and test the sensor; consider the module only after the sensor circuit passes.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor connector and clean serviceable corroded terminals.
- Repair chafed or vibration-damaged wiring and restore proper routing.
- Repair a poor sensor power or ground connection.
- Replace a pressure sensor that continues to drop out with a stable circuit.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, cautious short trips may be possible, but avoid heavy loads because intermittent pressure feedback can disrupt dosing and DPF regeneration. Stop safely if the signal fault is accompanied by stalling or a major loss of power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
