OBD-II fault code

P20DE: Exhaust Aftertreatment Fuel Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

Aftertreatment fuel-pressure sensor reads in range but plausibility fails — pressure does not rise during prime, drift across a regeneration.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The exhaust aftertreatment fuel pressure sensor measures pressure in the hydrocarbon-dosing rail used for DPF regeneration. P20DE means its signal is electrically plausible but does not behave as expected over time, such as failing to rise during priming or drifting during regeneration.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor drift
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and plot live rail-pressure readings during priming and any regeneration event to identify when the reading becomes implausible.
  2. Inspect the pressure sensor mounting and connector for looseness, contamination, corrosion, or wiring damage that could distort the reading.
  3. Compare the sensor's pressure reading with the system's commanded prime and known operating state to check whether it responds consistently.
  4. Verify actual rail pressure using the manufacturer's specified method and compare it with the sensor signal.
  5. If actual pressure behaves correctly but the signal remains implausible, test the sensor and its wiring against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose pressure sensor mounting or connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded sensor wiring and terminals.
  • Replace a pressure sensor that drifts or responds inconsistently despite correct actual pressure.
  • Correct a confirmed aftertreatment fuel supply issue if actual rail pressure does not rise as commanded.

Can I keep driving?

Cautious driving may be possible if the engine runs normally, but avoid high-load use because the faulty pressure feedback can disrupt dosing and regeneration. If hard starting, stalling, or substantial power loss occurs, stop driving and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
