What it means
This code indicates a high voltage condition in the reductant heater coolant control valve circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The reductant heater coolant control valve circuit operates the valve that routes engine coolant through the DEF heating loop. P20B4 means the module sees higher-than-expected voltage in the circuit, which can occur if a wire is shorted to battery power or a connection has excessive resistance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to B+
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and note whether the code appears with the valve commanded on, off, or at key-on.
- Inspect the valve connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, or insulation pinched against a power feed.
- Trace the circuit for a short to battery voltage, especially where the harness runs near power wiring or sharp edges.
- With the circuit isolated as directed by the manufacturer, check for unwanted voltage and test connector contact resistance.
- If the harness and valve are sound, verify the module output and circuit behavior using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring pinched or rubbed through to a battery feed.
- Clean or replace corroded high-resistance connector terminals.
- Restore a damaged connector or harness section.
- Replace the valve or repair the module only when circuit testing confirms the fault.
Can I keep driving?
You may be able to drive briefly, but the valve may not control DEF coolant heating properly and emissions warnings or a no-start countdown may follow. Avoid ignoring the warning, particularly in freezing conditions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
