OBD-II fault code

P20B1: Reductant Heater Coolant Control Valve Circuit/Open

What it means

The drive circuit for the engine-coolant control valve that warms the DEF tank/lines is open — coolant cannot be routed to the heating loop.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant heater coolant control valve directs engine coolant through the DEF tank and line heating loop. P20B1 means the valve's electrical drive circuit is open, so the valve may not operate and coolant may not reach that loop when heating is needed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid winding open
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related DEF heating or valve codes before clearing anything.
  2. Inspect the coolant control valve connector for a loose fit, corrosion, damaged wiring, or a terminal pushed back in the connector body.
  3. Trace the valve harness for breaks, chafing, or heat damage, paying attention to areas near the engine and coolant hoses.
  4. With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check the valve solenoid winding and circuit continuity for an open.
  5. If the valve and wiring test correctly, inspect the relevant module connections for an intermittent internal joint or drive fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose valve connector.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of valve wiring.
  • Restore a pushed-back terminal or replace a damaged connector housing.
  • Replace the valve if its winding is open to the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed faulty module.

Can I keep driving?

You can often drive while the vehicle has no other symptoms, but DEF heating may fail in cold weather and emissions warnings or a no-start countdown can follow. Arrange diagnosis promptly if temperatures are near freezing or a countdown is displayed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
