OBD-II fault code

P20B3: Reductant Heater Coolant Control Valve Circuit Low

What it means

This code indicates a low voltage condition in the reductant heater coolant control valve circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant heater coolant control valve circuit operates the valve that routes engine coolant through the DEF heating loop. P20B3 means the module detects a lower-than-expected electrical level in that circuit, commonly from a short to ground or resistance at a corroded connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check whether P20B3 returns immediately or only when the valve is commanded.
  2. Inspect the coolant control valve connector for corrosion, moisture, damaged insulation, or terminals with poor contact.
  3. Follow the valve wiring and look for chafing where it could touch ground or a bracket.
  4. With the valve circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test for a short to ground and check connector contact condition.
  5. If wiring and valve pass, verify the module's circuit output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose valve connector terminals.
  • Repair insulation damage or a wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace a damaged connector or terminal that cannot maintain contact.
  • Replace the valve or repair the module only if testing identifies it as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may drive normally at first, but the DEF heating loop may not work correctly and emissions warnings or a no-start countdown can develop. Get the circuit checked before cold weather or if a countdown appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
