What it means
Reductant coolant control valve is electrically OK but stuck open or does not modulate as commanded — DEF heating loop loses control authority.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The reductant heater coolant control valve regulates engine coolant flow through the DEF heating loop. P20B2 indicates the electrical command appears usable but the valve stays open or fails to move as commanded, leaving coolant flow through the loop uncontrolled.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve stuck open
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review any related coolant valve, DEF temperature, or heater codes.
- Inspect the valve connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, or damage that could make a mechanical fault appear intermittent.
- Use a scan tool's supported output control to command the valve and observe whether coolant flow or the reported valve response changes.
- Check the heating loop and valve for signs of unrestricted coolant flow when the command calls for the valve to close, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the valve does not respond despite sound wiring and a valid command, remove and inspect it for sticking, deposits, or mechanical wear.
Common fixes
- Repair loose or corroded valve connections.
- Clear debris or deposits from the valve if serviceable under the manufacturer's procedure.
- Replace a valve that sticks open or cannot modulate reliably.
- Repair any damaged harness found during the response test.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible, but an uncontrolled DEF heating loop can affect temperature management and trigger emissions warnings or a no-start countdown. Avoid extended use if the warning escalates or the vehicle reports a countdown.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
