What it means
Reductant air-pressure control valve mechanically stuck open — air pressure cannot be reduced, dosing atomisation off-spec.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The air pressure control valve adjusts compressed air used to atomise DEF as it enters the exhaust. P20AA means the valve is behaving as though it remains open when the system expects it to close, so air pressure may not fall as commanded and dosing can be affected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve stuck open
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded valve state with live air-pressure readings to confirm whether pressure stays high when the valve should close.
- Inspect the valve connector and wiring for damage that could keep the valve electrically commanded open.
- Check the air lines and fittings for leaks or restrictions that could make pressure readings misleading.
- Inspect the valve for debris, deposits, or mechanical wear that could prevent it from closing, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the valve command and pressure response against the manufacturer's specification to separate a mechanically stuck valve from a control fault.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring or connector damage that is holding the valve open electrically.
- Clear an air-line restriction or repair a leaking fitting found during testing.
- Clean the valve if the manufacturer's procedure permits and debris is preventing closure.
- Replace the air pressure control valve if it remains mechanically stuck open or is worn.
Can I keep driving?
You may be able to drive, but uncontrolled air pressure can disrupt DEF atomisation and raise NOx emissions; a restart countdown may follow. Arrange repair promptly and observe any countdown.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
