OBD-II fault code

P20A7: Reductant Injection Air Pressure Control Valve Performance

What it means

Reductant air-pressure control valve is electrically OK but cannot hold or modulate pressure within calibration — partial blockage or weak solenoid.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The air pressure control valve adjusts compressed air that helps atomise DEF during exhaust dosing. P20A7 means the circuit is electrically responsive, but the pressure it produces or controls does not behave as expected, which can impair dosing accuracy.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Air-pressure control valve sticking or partially blocked
  2. Weak valve solenoid
  3. Air leak or restriction in the pressure circuit
  4. Damaged or corroded connector or wiring

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and use live data to compare commanded and reported reductant air pressure while the fault conditions are present.
  2. Inspect the valve connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or other damage that could affect valve operation.
  3. Check the air lines and fittings for leaks, kinks, or restrictions that could prevent pressure from following the command.
  4. Check the valve for sticking or partial blockage using the manufacturer's inspection procedure.
  5. Test the valve solenoid and control circuit, then compare pressure response with the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a weak valve from an air-supply fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connector or wire.
  • Repair a leaking or restricted air line or fitting.
  • Clean or replace a sticking or partially blocked air pressure control valve as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Replace the valve if its solenoid is weak or its pressure response remains outside specification.

Can I keep driving?

You can often drive for a short time, but poor DEF atomisation can increase NOx emissions and may lead to a restart countdown. Check dashboard warnings and have the fault repaired soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
